Artificial fabrics were huge in the 1960’s and entire ad campaigns were built around them. Indeed, Shrimpton’s appearance at the Melbourne Cup was sponsored by Orlon (see Melbourne Cup page). Shrimpton was featured in many one-time ads for a variety of synthetic fabrics that frequently ran in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Acrilan Chemstrand and Orlon both traded on her name recognition (see below) to gain prominence for their fabrics. The Acrilan Chemstrand “box” campaign featured other models as well. The Klopman and 100% Cotton ads included a wide variety of models throughout the years.

Acrilan Chemstrand - I need hardly tell you that I am a model...

Acrilan Chemstrand - They'd like you for an Acrilan advertisement in Vogue.

Acrilan Chemstrand - But the Acrilan people want you specially.
